Alnus incana/rugosa (Speckled Alder)

A large deciduous shrub (15’) that grows along stream edges and swamps. Has ability to fix nitrogen. Clumps of Alder form excellent thicket wildlife cover. Good for bank stabilization. One of the most adaptable shrubs for difficult sites.

Amelanchier canadensis/arborea (Shadblow/Serviceberry)

Upright, tall shrub (18’+). Attractive white flowers before foliage emerges in spring. Berries eaten by birds. Good wetland buffer zone shrub.

Amelanchier laevis (Allegheny Seviceberry)

A large shrub (15-40’) featuring showy, fragrant flowers in early spring. In summer, its edible berries are favored by many birds. Grows well in moderately moist soil.

Arctostaphylos uva-ursi (Bearberry)

A low, trailing, slow-growing groundcover of dry Oak and Pine forests as well as back dunes. Berries provides wildlife food source.

Cephalanthus occidentalis (Buttonbush)

Medium-sized shrub, white globular-shaped flowers in summer. Prefers soils flooded or saturated for long periods or fluctuating hydrology. Nutlets are food for ducks and other birds.

A low shrub (2-5’) of sandy and gravelly sites. This species fixes nitrogen and will spread by root suckers.

A medium to tall shrub that grows in a wide range of soil conditions. Tolerates shade well. Spreads by roots. White fruit is eaten by birds in fall.

Formerly C. stolonifera, this rapidly growing, spreading shrub reaches 6-10’. Showy red stems in winter. Berries and twigs provide food for a wide variety of wildlife. Good for stream bank stabilization.

A low-growing, drought-tolerant evergreen shrub. Berries are a valuable wildlife food source. Forms a dense mound of foliage (3-6').

Lindera benzoin (Common Spicebush)

Medium shrub found in seasonal wetlands and moist woods. Red fruit important food source for many birds. The primary food of larval Spicebush Swallowtail butterflies. Fall foliage.

Myrica gale (Sweetgale)

Low-growing, (2-4”) bushy shrub. Blue-green to dark green foliage has a pleasant fragrance. Nitrogen fixer. Often found in bogs and acidic wetlands.

This low-growing, mat-forming shrub native to Northeastern rivers is effective in stabilizing sandy and gravelly soils along watercourses and sand dunes. It is an excellent species for soil bioengineering projects.

A non-native species introduced in colonial times. This is a medium shrub (10-12’). The NRCS has recommended it for erosion control. A vigorous shrub, this willow is usually planted along larger streams or moist sites. Also available in tubelings.

A non-native hybrid of western Europe introduced by NRCS. A trailing shrub (7’ or less) used for erosion control on stream banks. Very fast growing. Should be used in conjunction with native plants. Available in tubelings as well.
